1)what dietary supplement you are taking or you want to take (I.e.., it’s composition - vitamins , proteins , minerals ,etc..,) - as you haven’t mentioned it I would comment on general as a whole not specific
2)what company is manufacturing it .
3)In what form are you consuming it(example- tablet form(vitamins) , or powder form (protein powders) etc..,
4)what precautions are you taking while consuming these dietary supplements
Problems of these dietary supplements :-
a) problems due to adulteration of dietary supplements - believe it or not in adulteration of food is common in India for easy money making . It’s effect on your health can range from mild to severe effects
b) problems due to excess consumption of the product -example - excess consumption of protein supplements or calcium supplements can lead to kidney stones and acute kidney injury
Coming to each supplement commonly used -
vitamins - usually if you have vitamin deficiency’s doctor may have suggested you to take B-complex vitamins or any vitamin c etc.., so taking them in tablet or syrup forms as prescribed I.e.., once or twice daily is not harmful but beneficial in those with vitamin deficiency’s . But in people with normal vitamins level it doesn’t benefit much.
Proteins - body building supplement ( whey protein) - if you have any pre existing kidney problems , avoid protein supplements as it can progress to kidney failure ( so before taking protein supplements check your urine protein levels ,creatinine levels blood creatinine levels etc.., ) . If ure kidney and liver are normal then you can take this supplements once or twice daily based on your needs (I.e.., if you going to gym you require more protein for bodybuilding)with increased water intake .
Calcium supplements and vitamin D -take as prescribed by doctor I.e.., one or two tablets daily if you have any osteoporosis or osteopenia . If u self medicate without doctor advise you are at risk of developing kidney stones and acute kidney injury .
You need to check who makes them. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA generally speaking, so what the label says could be BS. I recommend purchasing supplements from manufacturers that are registered with the FDA, have GMP and so mother creds.
Remember supplements should enhance your intake, not be a replacement for it.
Because the term ‘natural’ is not medically or scientifically defined when used in this context, how ‘healthy’ any given supplement may be is very open to question.
Take vitamin B12, for example. Pharmaceutical grade B12 will be unlikely to contain other substances or toxic contaminants. But supplements from unregulated suppliers, many of whom are offshore, represent a real risk of being counterfeit and/or being heavily adulterated with contaminants — especially traditional Chinese herbal remedies/supplements. You can check out the Resurge supplement to get more information.
There is currently no credible evidence that supplements offer any substantial health benefits to persons already in generally good health.
